Home food-waste guide

Three habits that keep food out of the bin: store it well, compost the scraps, and recycle what it came in.

Step 1

Keep food fresh for longer

  • Store herbs like flowers: stems in a glass of water in the fridge.
  • Keep apples and bananas away from other fruit; they make it ripen faster.
  • Put the oldest food at the front of the fridge so it gets eaten first.

Step 2

Compost what you can't eat

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and eggshells can go in most compost bins.
  • Keep a small lidded bin on the counter and empty it once or twice a week.
  • No garden? Check whether your town collects food scraps or has a drop-off site.

Step 3

Recycle the packaging

  • Rinse jars and tins before they go in the recycling.
  • Check your local rules for plastic film and takeout containers; they vary by town.
